Eastern Tropical Pacific Killer Whales
A field guide to one of the least-understood killer-whale communities on Earth—tropical predators ranging from Pacific Mexico toward Central and South America.

Orcas in tropical water
Most of what the public knows about killer-whale culture comes from cold-water populations with decades of continuous observation. The Eastern Tropical Pacific is different. Encounters are scattered across an enormous ocean region, and many individual whales have historically been photographed only once.
Researchers now use “Eastern Tropical Pacific” for a broad region beginning around southern Baja California and extending toward northern Peru, including offshore waters. The whales within that region are not yet resolved into a single universally accepted population structure.
What is becoming clearer is that at least some whales around Pacific Mexico differ from the well-known high-latitude ecotypes. Their morphology, group structure, movements and extraordinarily broad prey choices have led researchers to propose a distinct tropical ecotype—and possibly one or more distinct tropical populations.

For the first time, researchers followed them
In February 2025, three members of a seven-whale group in Bahía de Banderas were fitted with satellite tags. Until then, tropical killer-whale movement was known mostly through rare photographic resightings.
The results changed the picture. During tag deployments lasting 8 to 41 days, the whales traveled about 4,002 km while repeatedly moving along a roughly 1,000-km corridor of the Mexican coast. They remained mostly nearshore but were capable of moving far offshore and diving hundreds of meters.
Researchers also documented an extraordinary range of prey and interactions during the study: a humpback calf, a dwarf sperm whale, bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins and sea turtles. That diversity strongly supports the idea of a tropical generalist ecotype rather than the narrow prey specialization familiar from many temperate killer-whale populations.
Generalists—with specialists inside the culture
The strongest emerging pattern is dietary breadth. Across the region, killer whales have been documented attacking prey from several completely different branches of the marine food web.
From dolphins to great whales
Documented prey or attacks include dolphins, dwarf sperm whales, humpbacks, Bryde’s whales, fin whales and a blue-whale calf.
A growing predation record
Gulf of California observations include whale sharks, bull sharks, rays and more recent interactions with juvenile white sharks.
Generalist does not mean identical
Whales such as Moctezuma and the large-whale hunters E256 and E261 suggest that particular individuals can develop specialized techniques within a broader generalist population.
The E-number catalogue
NOAA’s Eastern Tropical Pacific catalogue assigned individual identifiers beginning with E. Researchers use dorsal-fin shape, nicks and scars, saddle patches and other visible features to match whales between encounters.
Why multiple IDs appear
The same whale can exist in several regional photo-ID catalogues. E256, for example, has also been listed as ME87, MX87 and UABCS_Oo_M_077. Cross-matching these systems reveals movements that no single local catalogue could show alone.
Tropical markings can look different
Published work describes hooked eye-patch shapes as common in the ETP and saddle patches that can be less conspicuous than those of familiar temperate Northeast Pacific ecotypes. Tropical whales can also carry stalked barnacles that complicate identification from photographs.
Science in motion
This is not yet a population catalogue like the Southern Resident or Bigg’s guides. The 195 whales in the 2008 NOAA catalogue are photo-identified historical records, not a current abundance estimate, and the region’s social structure is still being resolved.
This WUTA guide therefore separates confirmed IDs and published research events from larger ecological interpretations. Where researchers describe a proposed ecotype or possible tropical population, the wording remains deliberately cautious.

01 E059 / E060 / E061 Known ID group
Research notes
- These three whales were part of NOAA catalogue group 25.00 off Cabo Corrientes, Mexico, in August 2000.
- They were photographically matched again off Guatemala in December 2011—about 1,778 km away and 11 years later.
- E060 was identified by two dorsal-fin notches, E061 by a distinctive saddle pattern, and E059 by a beveled dorsal-fin tip.
- The long-term match provides rare evidence of persistent social association among tropical killer whales.
02 E256 Known adult male
Research notes
- E256 has been cross-matched under several regional catalogue systems, including ME87, MX87 and UABCS_Oo_M_077.
- He has been photographed repeatedly around Baja California and was involved, alone or with E261, in multiple documented fin-whale kills.
- Researchers have suggested that E256 and E261 may represent a specialized large-whale-hunting tradition within a broader generalist tropical ecotype.
03 E261 Known adult male
Research notes
- E261 was photographed in the Gulf of California in 2006 and has also been cross-matched as MX157 and UABCS_Oo_M_089.
- He was later identified in waters off Southern California, demonstrating that Eastern Tropical Pacific whales can move north of their core tropical range.
- E261 was involved in several documented fin- and Bryde’s-whale attacks along Baja California.
04 Moctezuma Known adult male
Research notes
- Moctezuma is a large adult male first documented in 1992 in the Gulf of California.
- He has been repeatedly associated with predation on elasmobranchs, including Munk’s pygmy devil rays and whale sharks.
- Recent Gulf of California work suggests that shark- and ray-hunting may be a learned specialization concentrated in particular individuals rather than a behavior shared equally by all tropical killer whales.
05 NOAA Group 25.00 Long-term social group
Research notes
- Group 25.00 consisted of seven killer whales photographed off Cabo Corrientes, Mexico, in August 2000.
- At least three adults from this group—E059, E060 and E061—were matched in Guatemala 11 years later.
- The match is one of the strongest published examples of long-term group cohesion and large-scale movement in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
06 Bahía de Banderas tagged group 2025 satellite study
Research notes
- In February 2025, researchers satellite-tagged three whales from a group of seven in Bahía de Banderas, Mexico.
- The tags transmitted for 8 to 41 days and together documented about 4,002 km of travel along roughly 1,000 km of coastline.
- The whales spent 92.5% of their tracked time within 50 km of shore and 69% of their time in water shallower than 500 m.
- The deepest recorded dive reached 528 m.
07 Costa Rica Dome blue-whale hunt Predation record
Research notes
- On September 26, 2003, researchers encountered an estimated 19 killer whales feeding on a blue-whale calf about 230 km west of Nicaragua.
- The encounter lasted about 2.5 hours and produced photographs, genetics, acoustic recordings and behavioral observations.
- This remains one of the most important scientific records showing that tropical killer whales can coordinate attacks on the largest whale species on Earth.
08 Baja fin-whale hunters Predation record
Research notes
- A 2023 synthesis documented multiple fatal killer-whale attacks on fin whales around Baja California.
- Two recognizable males—E256 and E261—were involved separately or together in at least four of five documented Baja fin-whale kills.
- The same males were also linked to Bryde’s-whale kills, suggesting a possible large-whale-prey specialization within their social networks.
09 Manzanillo whale-shark pair Predation record
Research notes
- On March 28, 2021, two adult female killer whales were filmed attacking a juvenile whale shark about 24 km off Manzanillo, Colima.
- The whales repeatedly struck the shark’s ventral region before consuming it.
- Their eye patches and saddle patches were consistent with morphology described for proposed Eastern Tropical Pacific tropical killer whales.
10 Gulf of California shark hunters Predation culture
Research notes
- Killer whales in the Gulf of California have been documented hunting rays, whale sharks, bull sharks, prickly sharks and, more recently, juvenile white sharks.
- The evidence increasingly suggests that some of these techniques are concentrated in particular individuals and social groups.
- That creates an important contrast with the broad regional pattern: the proposed tropical ecotype appears generalist overall, while specific whales can still become highly specialized hunters.
11 Clipperton offshore group NOAA research group
Research notes
- NOAA’s 2008 catalogue recorded E226 and E228–E231 west of Clipperton Island in August 2006.
- This offshore record helps demonstrate that Eastern Tropical Pacific killer whales are not exclusively nearshore animals, even though recent Mexican satellite-tagged whales spent most of their tracked time close to the coast.
12 Peru offshore group NOAA research group
Research notes
- NOAA catalogued E232–E237 west of Peru in October 2006.
- Records this far south are part of the evidence behind the broad working definition of the Eastern Tropical Pacific region from southern Baja California toward northern Peru, including offshore waters.
13 Guatemala killer whales Central America record
Research notes
- Published Guatemalan records include groups containing adult males, females or younger whales and calves.
- A 2020 sighting in the San José Canyon involved an estimated 10–15 animals.
- The long-distance E059/E060/E061 match between Mexico and Guatemala shows that at least some tropical killer whales can move across large stretches of the eastern Pacific while maintaining social associations.
14 195-whale NOAA catalogue Photo-ID archive
Research notes
- The final 2008 NOAA Eastern Tropical Pacific photo-identification catalogue contains 195 individual killer whales, according to the 2026 comparison study that re-used the catalogue.
- The catalogue was built from opportunistic photographs collected during NOAA surveys spanning decades.
- Because tropical killer whales are encountered much less consistently than well-known coastal populations, catalogue size should not be interpreted as a current abundance estimate.
