Bison are the largest land mammals in North America, with adult males capable of weighing more than a small car.

But being huge doesn’t make them slow.

Bison can run surprisingly fast, move through deep snow, swim, leap, and travel across enormous landscapes together in herds.

They also help shape the places where they live. Grazing, movement, and even their dusty wallows can create habitat used by other plants and animals.
